NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to Indonesia is expected to deliver several major strategic outcomes, with agreements likely in defence, critical minerals, maritime infrastructure and electoral technology.PM Modi is in Indonesia from July 6 to 8 at the invitation of President Prabowo Subianto, marking the first bilateral visit since the two countries elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.

Defence ties set for major boost

According to ANI sources, Indonesia has decided to procure India’s Astra air-to-air missiles, impressed by their demonstrated capabilities during Operation Sindoor.India will also support Indonesia in expanding its BrahMos missile inventory by supplying additional batteries, further strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries.In another significant development, India will assist Indonesia in developing Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), reflecting confidence in India’s election management system.

Focus on critical minerals, maritime cooperation

To strengthen critical mineral supply chains, India is expected to invest in the manufacturing of steel, nickel and rare-earth permanent magnets in Indonesia.The two sides are also set to jointly develop Sabang Port, strategically located near the Strait of Malacca and about 100 miles from India’s Great Nicobar port project, a move expected to enhance maritime connectivity and regional security cooperation.

Grand ceremonial welcome in Jakarta

Prime Minister Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Istana Merdeka (Presidential Palace) in Jakarta, where he met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The two leaders exchanged greetings, shook hands and PM Modi signed the presidential guestbook.Earlier, upon his arrival in Jakarta, Modi’s aircraft was escorted by Indonesian Air Force fighter jets. President Prabowo personally received him at the airport, where he was welcomed with a traditional cultural dance performance.The ministry of external affairs has described the visit as an important step in advancing the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and opening new avenues for cooperation across priority sectors.The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in defence, maritime security, critical minerals and strategic infrastructure.
