LUCKNOW: Siddharthnagar police on Wednesday exhumed the body of a 20-year-old woman from the mud floor of a room in her matrimonial home in Chak Majhari village of Dumariyaganj, after her husband was accused of killing her and attempting to pass the case off as a disappearance. The deceased was identified as Mufidan. Police said her husband, Shamsher, 22, allegedly murdered her, dug a pit nearly 6 feet deep inside the house, buried her body, plastered the floor with fresh mud and placed a cot over the spot. Investigators said he continued sleeping on the cot for several days before trying to divert suspicion by lodging a missing person complaint.According to police, Shamsher, a labourer who worked in Mumbai, came in contact with Majhar of Dasiya village in neighbouring Sant Kabir Nagar district. During visits to Majhar’s home, Shamsher developed a relationship with Majhar’s daughter, Mufidan. The couple later eloped and, with the consent of both families, solemnised their marriage on June 1.Police said the relationship deteriorated soon after the marriage, with frequent quarrels. Investigators alleged Shamsher suspected his wife of talking to another man on the phone, and that suspicion culminated in the murder. On July 13, Shamsher approached Dumariyaganj police station and filed a missing person complaint, claiming Mufidan disappeared on July 11, police said. However, her mother, Safidunisha, submitted a separate complaint alleging her son-in-law and his parents killed her daughter and concealed the body.Acting on Safidunisha’s complaint, a police team searched the house on Wednesday and noticed signs of fresh plastering on the earthen floor in one room. The spot was excavated and Mufidan’s body was recovered from the pit, police said. After the recovery, Shamsher, his father, Nibar, and mother, Khushboonisha, fled the village, police said. An FIR was registered against all three. Dumariyaganj Circle Officer Brijesh Verma said the body was sent for post-mortem to establish the cause and time of death, and multiple teams were formed to arrest the accused and reconstruct the sequence of events.
