BENGALURU: A 20-year-old undergraduate student was found dead in Sankey Tank Tuesday morning. Police suspect the girl died by suicide by jumping into the lake Monday evening, as she had sent a message to her male friend stating that she intended to end her life. The deceased, Tejaswini alias Teju, was a resident of Chikkabanavara and second year of BCom student at a private college on MES Ring Road in Jalahalli.Tejaswini left college around 12. 30pm after attending classes. Instead of heading home, she spent time in the nearby areas before entering Sankey Tank at 3. 55pm.Police said she walked around the premises, sat on a slab for some time, and visited the low-lying section of the tank on multiple occasions, before allegedly jumping at 6pm.Police said Tejaswini had sent a WhatsApp message to her boyfriend in the evening stating that she intended to end her life, saying she felt “life was enough”, before switching off her phone. After seeing the message, he tried calling her but found her phone switched off. He then alerted her mother, Pushpa, and urged her to counsel Tejaswini against taking the extreme step.Panicked, Pushpa alerted her family members and went in search of her. Pushpa later lodged a complaint with Sadashivanagar police.Police, fire and emergency services personnel, along with family members, searched the Sankey Tank premises till 1am but found only her bag and mobile phone. On Tuesday morning, her body was found near the 18th Cross entrance.A case of Unnatural Death Report (UDR) has been registered, said deputy commissioner of police (Central) Akshay M Hakay.Police said Tejaswini’s parents had separated following a marital dispute, and she was reportedly disturbed after an issue with her male friend two weeks ago. No death note was found, and the investigation is on from all angles, an officer said. Her brother-in-law Sunil alleged that poor security at Sankey Tank allowed her to enter the lake. CCTV footage showed Tejaswini buying a water bottle from a nearby shop before entering the premises around 3. 55pm. She was last seen around 5. 55pm and did not exit the premises thereafter. If you are having suicidal thoughts or in need of emotional support, call suicide prevention helplines: Tele-Manas helpline: 14416 or 1800-891-4416, SAHAI Helpline: 080-25497777.
