Over the years, many of my disciples have chosen to celebrate the 20th of July as Tree Day, and not merely my birthday. While birthdays often become occasions centred on individuals, I have always hoped this day would encourage us to reflect upon one of creation’s greatest teachers: the tree. If this celebration inspires us to become more deeply rooted in truth, more generous in spirit, and more selfless in our actions, then it has truly served its purpose. Among all living beings, few embody the spirit of selfless existence as completely as a tree. A tree stands quietly through every season. It neither announces its presence nor seeks recognition for its service. Yet its entire existence becomes a blessing for others. It offers shade without asking who deserves it, bears fruit without choosing who may eat it, and continues to give even after its own lifetime has come to an end.

Perhaps this is why the scriptures repeatedly employ the tree as a symbol of the ideal devotee. A tree teaches what words often cannot. The journey of divine love resembles the growth of a tree. Nothing begins with the branches. Everything begins beneath the surface. The visible beauty of a tree depends entirely upon roots that remain unseen. So it is with spiritual life. Our devotion is sustained not by what the world applauds, but by what quietly nourishes the heart. Faith, humility, and sincere association become the hidden roots from which every spiritual virtue draws its strength. When these roots deepen, the storms of life no longer possess the power to uproot us. A tree survives because it remains connected to its source. The moment its roots are severed, its decline begins. Human life follows the same principle. The world constantly encourages us to establish our identity through possessions, achievements, and recognition. Yet all of these resemble leaves that change with every season. Today they flourish; tomorrow they fall. True stability comes only when our lives remain rooted in the lotus feet of Shri Krishna and nourished through the grace of Guru. Only a deeply rooted tree can withstand fierce winds. Only a deeply rooted devotee can withstand the storms of Maya. The tree also teaches us the meaning of service. Everything it produces is offered outward. Its fruit nourishes others. Its flowers bring beauty to others. Its shade comforts others. Even when the tree finally falls, its wood continues serving long after its life appears to have ended. Nothing exists foritself. This is Nishkama Seva in its purest form. Love follows the same law. The moment love begins demanding something in return, it gradually loses its purity. Wherever expectation dominates, disappointment quietly follows. Divine love, however, flows in the opposite direction. It seeks only opportunities to give. This is why our parents become our first experience of unconditional love. It is why the Guru occupies such a sacred place in our lives. Like a great tree, they willingly endure life’s heat so that those under their care may receive shelter. They absorb difficulties that others may never even notice, and continue giving without keeping an account of what they have offered. The highest form of gratitude is not merely to admire such a life. It is to become one ourselves. Every compassionate word we speak becomes shade for someone carrying unseen burdens. Every act of kindness becomes fruit offered to a hungry soul. Every moment spent guiding another towards truth becomes another seed planted for generations yet to come. A single tree rarely exists alone. It silently creates a forest. In the same way, one life rooted in devotion naturally inspires many others to grow. Perhaps this is the deeper significance of Tree Day. It reminds us that the world does not need more people seeking recognition. It needs more people willing to become trees. To stand firmly in truth. To remain deeply rooted in the Divine. And to spend an entire lifetime giving far more than they ever receive.
